Reference numerals
The Birth Of New Technology
Meyer numbered everything he drew — Magnetic Induction Core (619), Traveling Voltage Wave-Action (770) of Figure (8-1), pulsing operations (49a xxx 49n) — and the same numbers sit on the drawings. Each entry here gathers the drawings that show it and every passage that names it, in the order the book has them.
How to read the numbers
- (619)
- A part, a wave or a stage, numbered once and kept across the whole book. The same number in another patent is a different thing.
- (616A/B)
- Two of the same, lettered: 616A and 616B.
- (49a xxx 49n)
- A run of the same thing from the first, a, to the last, n; the x's stand for however many lie between. Every stage is (49).
- (E9a - b - c - d - E9n)
- The same run written out, one letter per stage. Every stage is (E9).
- (583/602a xxx 583/602n)
- A run of pairs: at each stage one 583 and one 602, which go together.
- Figure (8-1)
- The drawing, numbered chapter-figure. A patent's are FIG. 1, FIG. 2.
- (Vpp)
- A quantity marked on the drawing rather than a part: a voltage, a gap, an impedance.
Where a scan was read by machine the numbers are sometimes wrong — (400 xxx 46n) is 46a to 46n — and the catalogue reads them as Meyer wrote them.
