To permanently magnetize the gas particles (16) inside the tube (1), an electrical potential is applied across the pickup coils (2a...2n), forming electromagnetic field (4) that jumps the air gap (7); once removed, the field remains because the gas particles stay permanently magnetized, putting the device into a State of Quiescent.
