Grandview Heights High School: the yearbooks, 1955 to 1959

The school

Grandview Heights is a small independent city inside Columbus, three miles west of downtown, and its high school is the one the twins finished at. The archive has had that fact from the Dispatch for a while — “Meyer was born and lived on Columbus’ East Side before moving to Grandview Heights, where he finished high school” — but not a single page of the record. These are seven of them.

The years below are as the archive’s editor labelled the files. Only two of the seven pages carry a printed year of their own, so the sequence rests on that labelling and on the class lists, which do run consistently: the same names move up a year at a time.

Stephen in the early years, Stan in the later ones

Steven Meyer is in the 1955 and 1956 groups and Stanley is not. Stanley is in the 1957 and 1958 groups and Steven is not. The twins were born in August 1940, within an hour of each other, and they finished at the same school.

The likeliest explanation is the dullest: a class of that size was photographed in sections, each section got its own page, and the archive holds one page a year. A twin in the other section would simply be on a page nobody has photographed. Being absent on the day the picture was taken does the same job.

Two other readings are possible and neither is supported by anything here: that Stan arrived at Grandview later than Stephen, or that the two were placed in different years. The archive does not choose between them. What it records is the pattern, so that anyone who gets at the full volumes knows exactly which pages to look at.

What year did he leave?

If 1956 was the freshman year, 1957 the sophomore and 1958 the junior, the senior year is 1959 and the portrait page above comes from the 1959 volume. That fits a boy born in August 1940, who would turn eighteen in the August before his last year. The archive prints the sequence rather than a graduation year, because no page here carries one.
