220 Ω across VIC primary: in the hand-drawn "VIC Coil Pack" sketch (believed Gabel, unconfirmed), not found in patents; Scotchn has it fitted
Hand-drawn "VIC Coil Pack" wiring sketch (shared by Scotchn 2026-09-29; believed Don Gabel / estate photo set, author unconfirmed, awaiting Chris Bake). It shows a 220 Ω resistor across the primary F/S leads. An archive search of patents, memos and figure values found no resistor across the primary. Conflicting account: Don Gabel at Bremen 2014 said the primary had a 1N4005 freewheeling diode "around the primary side of the coil". Scotchn confirmed on 2026-09-29 that his build has a 220 Ω "brake" across the primary and that it is still fitted. Derived estimates using Don's primary measurements (41 mH on core @1 kHz, 10.5 Ω DCR), illustrative case of 12 V applied for 100 µs: magnetising current ≈29 mA; flyback ≈ I·R ≈ 6.5 V above the rail; decay τ ≈ L/(R+R_dc) ≈ 178 µs; the resistor draws 55 mA while the switch is on. Reflected across the secondary it is ≈ R·n² ≈ 5.4 kΩ (n ≈ 5, tight-coupling assumption) against X_sec ≈ 16 kΩ at 2.5 kHz, so it damps the off-time ring heavily. Trade-off: flyback suppression vs tank Q. A/B test (with vs without, with a diode clamp substituted) is still pending.
