Blocking the light beam drives the corresponding Optoschmitt output low

Once light-gate (9) blocks traveling light-beam (3) from reaching a matched Optoschmitt, the darkened Optoschmitt (11, non-energized) changes output state as irradiance drops to or below the release point, triggering the opposite (low) logic state (12).
