HYPOTHESIS that unifies the post-rewire data: the diode + 10.3 Ω sit across ONE winding (a tail pair misidentified at one end of the bifilar). The ms tail would then be REAL freewheeling magnetizing current. Corrects my "probe artifact" conclusion (#3466/

  • Scotchn, Discord #neuralstan20-testing 2026-09-30 — wiring "as per the drawing now ... pretty sure it was before also." Yet diode-jumpered vs diode-in at the open gap (#3468) gave 8 Vpp vs ~85 V.
  • HYPOTHESIS — on a bifilar, the two tails at each end look identical. If one end's pair is swapped (e.g. the terminal used as "AF" is really BF), then: (1) diode + 10.3 Ω connect the two ends of ONE winding, forming a freewheeling clamp loop independent of the pot/cap loop; (2) the pot gap spans the OTHER winding alone, so gap ≈ one winding's EMF (~85 V) with the diode in; (3) jumpering the diode short-circuits a winding on the core, collapsing the flux, so the gap drops to a small sawtooth (8 Vpp). That is what was seen.
  • Consequences if true — the pulse-by-pulse CH1 build-up and ms decay across the 10.3 Ω is REAL current. Magnetizing current ratchets with unipolar drive: ΔI_p ≈ 4 V × 25 µs / 0.249 mH ≈ 0.4 A per pulse. It freewheels through the diode + shunt during off-times, with decay set by L/R plus a roughly constant diode drop (a near-linear decay, as seen). It explains why the tail ignored C_t, the pot and loop opening (a different loop), why the intact 10.3 Ω showed it, and why the jumper removed most of it.
  • CORRECTIONS — #3464's "impossible" was overstated. 0.77 mJ/burst × 182/s needs ≈ 35 mA at 4 V against the 15 mA shown, a factor ~2.3, within the uncertainty of the photo-read amplitude (energy ∝ I²). #3466/#3467's "measurement-chain artifact" conclusion rested on the resistor being in the pot loop and is withdrawn pending the check. #3468's "series-opposing" reading is an alternative to this one; the DMM test separates them.
  • TEST (power off, DMM) — lift the diode and measure across its two pads. ~3.8 Ω = the diode was across a single winding (hypothesis confirmed); open = correct aiding wiring. Also measure across the open pot gap: ~3.8 Ω = one winding. Then re-identify the tails by continuity (As↔AF, Bs↔BF ≈ 3.8 Ω each) and relabel.
