VIC5 220 Ω primary shunt reflects ~919 Ω series loss into the charging loop at 2.9 kHz (k_sp ≤ 0.42); flattens driver load 167–219 Ω over 1–10 kHz

  • Prompted by Chris Freedom (Discord #neuralstan20-testing 2026-09-29), who claimed the 220 Ω across the VIC5 primary is for impedance matching and that with it fitted the only ringing is the choke-cell tank. Data: Don Gabel VIC coil readings (estate VIC5, on core, others open, 1 kHz): Lp 40.88 mH, Ls 1012.5 mH, primary DCR 10.5 Ω. Secondary with all others shorted 837.7 mH at 1 kHz → ratio 0.827 → k(sec, shorted set incl. primary) ≤ 0.42 (upper bound; the primary's short is good at 1 kHz since ωLp = 257 Ω ≫ 10.5 Ω). Turns ratio from sqrt(Ls/Lp) ≈ 4.98.
  • (1) Driver-side — corner R/(2πLp) = 857 Hz. |Zin| with 220 Ω: 167 Ω @1 kHz to 219 Ω @10 kHz, against 257 to 2,569 Ω for the bare primary. The "flattening" claim holds numerically; the resistor also clamps the magnetizing flyback at switch-off, which removes primary self-ring (the "signal clarity").
  • (2) Tank-side — the charging loop (secondary → diode → choke → cell → choke → secondary) always contains the secondary, so the shunt reflects in: Z_refl = (ωM)²/(R + jωLp). At 2906 Hz with k = 0.42: 220 Ω fitted → 919 − j2970 Ω; primary shorted by ON switch → 46 − j3254 Ω; primary open with no R → ~0.
  • (3) For Chris's design (1.2 H, 2.5 nF, f0 = 2906 Hz), using the VIC5 copper loop (C1 76.7 + C2 70.1 + sec 72.4 = 219 Ω): copper-only Q = 100. Adding 919 Ω → Q = 19.3. Both are ceilings: core loss is ignored and the damping scales with k².
  • Proposed test — LCR the secondary at 1 kHz with the primary open, then with 220 Ω across it; the rise in series R is the reflected loss. Related to the open hypothesis on Scotchn's VIC5 ceiling (#3440, #3441).
