VIC5 chokes share the ferrite core with the secondary, but k(choke, secondary) ≤ 0.42: mostly choke, partly extension
Prompted by Chris Freedom (Discord #neuralstan20-testing 2026-10-02): are the VIC5 chokes extensions of the secondary or only chokes? Data: Don Gabel VIC coil readings (estate VIC5, B&K LCR, 1 kHz). (1) The chokes are on the common core: C1 air-core 76.28 mH goes to 1218.8 mH on the core (x16), C2 64.26 mH to 1093 mH, the same x15-16 as the secondary (68.6 mH to 1012.5 mH). So they share core flux; they are not independent chokes. (2) The secondary with ALL other windings shorted reads 837.7 mH vs 1012.5 mH open, so 1-k^2 = 0.827 and k(secondary, whole shorted set) = 0.42. Coupling is symmetric, so k between the secondary and either choke individually is <= 0.42. (3) C1 with all others shorted drops to 600.6 mH (ratio 0.493, k to set ~0.71). Because its link to the secondary is capped at 0.42, most of C1's coupling has to go to C2/feedback/primary. Conclusion: relative to the secondary, each choke is >= 83% its own inductance (leakage-dominated) and carries a minority transformer-coupled EMF, so winding polarity (aiding vs opposing the secondary) matters. Caveats: single-frequency shorted-set readings; the per-pair k is an upper bound, not measured. Direct test: series-aiding minus series-opposing L = 4M.
