Stan and the Bible

Stan put a Bible verse on his logo, "Jesus Christ is Lord" on the hood of the buggy, and the Lord in the first person of his design history: "the Lord had me develop the VIC circuit", "the Lord told me to take a non-magnetic closed-loop tube". Every lecture the archive has transcribed opens with his conversion and returns to scripture at the turns of the argument. This page gathers what he actually cited, with the verses beside his readings of them, and then goes further than he did into the two books he leaned on, Job and Ezekiel, to see what else is there. The first part is the record. The second is interpretation, and says so.

Quotations of scripture are from the King James Version, which is the one Stan quoted.

1975

The story is the same each time he tells it. In the Arab embargo his truck-parts business stopped with the trucks; he was told the food chain would break in 27 days; he decided somebody had to bring in a new fuel and that it would not be the government. Then, at Deer Creek in 1985:

"When the Lord started revealing himself to me and started talking to me, and such a feeling, filled with the Holy Spirit, I've been exercising the gifts of the Holy Spirit and exercising the power of faith to bring in this power supply in this country. You see, the scripture says the Lord raised up a weak man and makes him strong." Deer Creek, part 1, 4:50

"The Lord said to me, 'Greatly I have given unto you, and greatly I expect in return.' The power supply, the purpose of the power supply, is to help to aid and finance the last major command in the Bible, to spread the gospel throughout all the world, and then the end time will come." Part 1, 6:19

"If I would have died back in 1975, the only place I would be is in hell today. ... Like Paul on the road to Damascus, I accepted the Lord, did what the Lord said in scripture, and subsequently was filled with the Holy Spirit." Part 1, 7:54

And in Denver twelve years later, the same event told plainer:

"So I went in my office laboratory and I just simply asked a prayer to God. I said, God, I love my country. It's the greatest country in the world. I have been all over the world. If you will help me put a power supply in the country, I'll do anything you want to do. And subsequently, I was filled with the Holy Spirit." Denver, 1997, 3:17

The three scriptures folded into the Deer Creek telling are not quoted exactly, and he does not give chapter and verse, but they are recognisable. "The Lord raised up a weak man and makes him strong" is Hebrews 11:34, of the faithful who "out of weakness were made strong", or 1 Corinthians 1:27, "God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty." "Greatly I have given unto you, and greatly I expect in return" is Luke 12:48, "unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required." "The last major command" is Matthew 24:14: "And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come." Stan's reading of that last verse is the purpose he gave the whole enterprise, at Deer Creek and in the cover of the EPG book: the water fuel cell exists "to set up the financial base capable of completing Scripture."

The verse on the logo

"Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail, which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?" Job 38:22–23

This is on the Water Fuel Cell logo and on the title pages of the books, and Stan sent every Deer Creek audience home to look it up. His reading, in full:

"As the Lord started dealing with me pertaining to the technology on water, after all, the Lord created heaven and earth, right? He ought to know how to be able to split the water molecule economically. ... This is the Lord talking to Job, asking Job this question. The interpretation of these scriptures is as follows. Snow is the most beautiful part about water, is it not? Have you ever looked at snow, with the little snow crystals, and no one snow crystal is the same as that of another? The 'treasures of snow' is the characteristics and knowledge of water. The Lord specified that the knowledge pertaining to water would come out of a time of great trouble. But the Lord also specified that this knowledge would come prior to two events: battle and war. This knowledge would also be utilized to stabilize the military conditions of the world, and at the same time, stabilize the economic basis of the world." Part 1, 10:07 to 15:50

Three moves are made here, and it is worth separating them. The treasures of the snow become the knowledge of water: a metaphor read as a promise. "Reserved against the time of trouble" becomes a date, the energy crisis of the 1970s, and so a claim that the knowledge was released to him then. And "the day of battle and war" becomes a sequence: the knowledge comes first, the war after, and the knowledge is what will be used in it. He goes on to fix the war as Armageddon and to argue from Luke 17:34–36, the two in one bed and the two in the field, that the rapture comes in a time of peace and prosperity, so that the water technology must come in first and bring the prosperity. That is why, he says, he is not building "marble monuments" with the money.

Job, read further

The verse Stan chose sits inside the longest speech God makes in the Bible, chapters 38 to 41, the answer out of the whirlwind. Job has demanded an explanation for his suffering. God does not give one. He asks questions, about sixty of them, every one about the making and the running of the physical world, and the point of every one is that Job did not make it and cannot say how it works. "Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding." The verse about the snow and hail is one of those questions.

Read that way, the verse makes a stranger claim than Stan's. It is not a promise that the knowledge of water will be given; it is a statement that it is withheld, held in store by God for his own purposes. Stan turned that around: if God knows how water works and reserves that knowledge for a time of trouble, then a man to whom God speaks in a time of trouble might be given it. The logic is his, not the text's. But the choice of verse is telling, because it is the one place in scripture where knowledge of water is treated as a treasury that can be opened, and he read it as opened to him.

Job is also, of all the books, the one most crowded with water and with lightning, which is to say with the two things the water fuel cell is made of. Stan quoted one verse from it. These are the others that a reader of his memos would stop at, with what the memos say beside them. None of these readings is Stan's; they are the archive's, offered for what they are worth.

The drop and the vapour. "For he maketh small the drops of water: they pour down rain according to the vapour thereof: which the clouds do drop and distil upon man abundantly." Job 36:27–28. The injector memos are about exactly this, water made small: the spray ports (41a xxx 41n) that turn the fuel into droplets (48a xxx 48n), the mist (47a xxx 47n) mixed with ionised air. Meyer's own word for the exhaust is "water mist"; his closing argument at Denver was that the mist would rain back down and be used again.

The waters by measure. "To make the weight for the winds; and he weigheth the waters by measure. When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder." Job 28:25–26, and again at 38:25, "Who hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder." Water measured, and a path made for the lightning to travel: the memos' resonant cavity is a measured quantity of water with a path for a voltage to cross it.

Light parted. "By what way is the light parted, which scattereth the east wind upon the earth?" Job 38:24. The gas processor and the thermal lens memos are about light directed into gas and water to loosen electrons; "parted" light is a phrase Stan would have liked.

The lightnings that answer. "Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee, Here we are?" Job 38:35. Lightning under command, going where it is sent and reporting back. Of all the questions in the whirlwind this is the one an electrical engineer would take personally, and it is the one Stan's whole circuit claims to answer: a voltage sent across the water molecule on a programmed pulse-train, and the gas that comes back.

Ice as stone. "Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it? The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen." Job 38:29–30. Stan read the snow crystal as the signature of water's inner order. The next verses say the same order can lock water solid. The memos' claim is the reverse operation: that the same molecule, taken to the right voltage, comes apart.

Leviathan's breath. "Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out. Out of his nostrils goeth smoke, as out of a seething pot or caldron. His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth out of his mouth." Job 41:19–21. The last of God's creatures in the speech is a creature of the sea that breathes fire. Stan never cited it, and the archive does not suggest he had it in mind. It is set down because the reader who knows what the hydrogen gas gun does, a flame out of water, will notice it, and because it is the image in Job that answers the logo: the treasures of the deep, and fire coming out of them.

What holds these together is not that Job describes a machine. It is that Job is the book in which God lists the workings of water, cloud, frost, rain, lightning and light as the things man does not understand, and Stan, who said God spoke to him in 1975, took the list as a syllabus.

Ezekiel

Stan cited Ezekiel twice in the transcribed record, once for its wheel and once for its eyes.

The eyes are at Denver, and he attributes the line to the Lord speaking to him directly:

"The Lord says to me, we have eyes, but we do not see. We have ears, but we do not hear. What caused the formation of the energy of a hurricane or a tornado? And what caused lightning to be formed in a storm cloud? And what the Lord has shown me is this. He posed several questions. How is it that a fetus in a mother's womb can undergo atomic structuring to give us life? ... How is it that you can take a seed of a plant, put it in the ground and grow a tree 90 foot high?" Denver, 32:46

The words are Ezekiel 12:2, "Son of man, thou dwellest in the midst of a rebellious house, which have eyes to see, and see not; they have ears to hear, and hear not," repeated by Jeremiah (5:21) and by Jesus (Mark 8:18). What follows them in Stan's telling is the whirlwind speech again, questions about energy in nature that nobody can answer, now put to Stan rather than to Job, and answered with the claim that energy enters from outside the three dimensions, which is the argument of the thermal-lens memo.

The wheel is at Deer Creek, in the passage on the water-powered rocket:

"When you look at scripture, go back and look at Ezekiel's wheel. The only reason why we have not put a manned satellite in outer space is because we have a logistics problem ... we can't transport standard fossil fuels into outer space economically. But when you're talking about fuel cell technology releasing a phenomenal amount of energy in a controlled state ... you can sustain and maintain a space station in outer space, just exactly as Ezekiel had prophesied, that in the end time, you will see the manned satellite put out there. And when you look at its design, look at scripture. When you look at an American space station, look at the scriptures, and you will see a wheel within a wheel, and that will be the power supply that will provide that." Part 3, 72:37 to 73:27

The vision he means is the first chapter of the book:

"And I looked, and, behold, a whirlwind came out of the north, a great cloud, and a fire infolding itself, and a brightness was about it, and out of the midst thereof as the colour of amber, out of the midst of the fire. ... As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, and like the appearance of lamps: it went up and down among the living creatures; and the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning. And the living creatures ran and returned as the appearance of a flash of lightning. Now as I beheld the living creatures, behold one wheel upon the earth by the living creatures, with his four faces. The appearance of the wheels and their work was like unto the colour of a beryl: and they four had one likeness: and their appearance and their work was as it were a wheel in the middle of a wheel. When they went, they went upon their four sides: and they turned not when they went. As for their rings, they were so high that they were dreadful; and their rings were full of eyes round about them four. And when the living creatures went, the wheels went by them: and when the living creatures were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up. ... for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels." Ezekiel 1:4, 13–20

Stan's reading, taken at his word, is about the station, not the generator: the wheel-shaped space habitat of 1950s and 1960s design, the Von Braun wheel, is what he says Ezekiel saw, and the "wheel within a wheel" is the power supply that will let it be built and kept. He does not say which of his devices he means.

The reading that has grown up since, in the community, is that the wheel within a wheel is the Electrical Particle Generator, and it is not a bad reading. The EPG is a closed ring, "a non-magnetic closed-loop tube", Stan said the Lord told him to take, with a magnetised gas run round inside it and pickup windings wound round outside: a wheel in the middle of a wheel, in the plainest sense. "The spirit of the living creature was in the wheels" reads, to somebody who has spent time on the memos, like the moving gas that carries the field. And the Electrical Pulse Generator of patent 4,613,779 is the same figure made literal: a stationary disc with one series of electromagnets round its outer periphery and a second series round its inner, one ring inside another. Add that the Hebrew word rendered "amber" in verses 4 and 27, chashmal, is the word modern Hebrew chose for electricity, and the vision has been read as an electrical machine by people long before Stan. All of this is interpretation. Stan's own sentence ties the wheel to a space station and to "the power supply" without naming it, and the archive has found no place where he calls the EPG Ezekiel's wheel. If the tape exists, it will be in the untranscribed films, and the transcription project is looking.

Two more things in Ezekiel belong here. The living creatures move "as the appearance of a flash of lightning" and do not turn as they go, which is the kind of line the community's readers set against the memos' talk of particle motion in the tube; and the book ends, in chapter 47, with a river running out from under the temple that heals everything it reaches, "and every thing shall live whither the river cometh." That is the register Stan spoke in about Egypt, the Mediterranean made fresh and the desert irrigated, "the scripture has foretold that in the end time, even the deserts will blossom" Part 3, 62:25, though the verse he had in mind there is Isaiah 35:1, "the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose."

The other verses he named

• Wormwood. "And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter." Revelation 8:11. Stan: "the Russian word for wormwood is Chernobyl", and the radiation draining to the Black Sea and the Mediterranean is the bitter water Part 1, 12:00. The identification was everywhere in 1986. It is close rather than exact: chornobyl in Ukrainian is mugwort, Artemisia vulgaris, a cousin of wormwood, Artemisia absinthium, and both are bitter herbs of the same family.
• The flesh that melts. "Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes." Zechariah 14:12. Stan: not a nuclear blast, since at Hiroshima bodies vaporised, but a particle-beam weapon, and one that the energy from water could power, which is why he would not withhold the technology from the military Part 3, 70:58.
• The two in one bed. Luke 17:34–36, read for the timing of the rapture, above.
• The great commission. Matthew 24:14, the reason for the money, above.
• Jesus Christ is Lord. Philippians 2:11, on the hood of the buggy and on the EPG book's cover.

He did not, in anything transcribed so far, cite Genesis on the waters above and below the firmament, or Moses at the Red Sea, or any text about angels. Those readings belong to his readers.

The book he was writing

"Now, I'm writing a book about it. It's titled 'With the Lord as Purpose', to talk about my faith walk. I'm really on volume 38, and I'll probably be on volume 52 before it's completed." Denver, 55:23

The title is usually given as With the Lord There Is Purpose. It was named in his introduction at the Colorado symposium in 1993 and, Jim Miller found, ran to at least 28 chapters; it was never published. James Wight, who filmed Stan's lab, said on Jim's thread that Stan had told him he was working on it, that it was never finished, and that whatever survives is probably on the computers that were sold with the estate. The thread is here. The "volumes" of Denver are best read as the working notebooks the memos also came out of; the memos themselves are numbered in the four hundreds.

What the people who knew him say

The family did not always believe him about the car, and say so; about the faith they are consistent. His niece: "he also said Jesus told him to build the car." Her sister, of his refusal to sell out: "I'm going to trust in the Lord and this is what I need to be doing. He really truly believed he was put on this earth to do this." Bruce Lippiatt, who sold him the acetal for the cells, was told of an assassination attempt in the Middle East "but God thwarted it", and adds: "He said he was a Christian, so I gave him the benefit of the doubt." The neighbours remember the bodyguards and the strangers at the door. His sister's mother, Barbara says, was a Jehovah's Witness. All of it is on the register.

What to make of it

Stan did not present the Bible as a technical manual with a circuit hidden in it, and the archive should not either. He presented it as prophecy the technology would fulfil, and the Lord as the source of particular instructions: the closed-loop tube, the VIC circuit, the steam resonator, the catalytic block, each "the Lord had me develop". The verses he chose are consistent with that. Job 38 says the knowledge of water is God's to give. Ezekiel says the wheel is coming. Matthew says what the money is for. Whether his readings are right is a question for the reader's own theology; what this page can say is that they are his, that they were stable for the twelve years between the two lectures, and that the book of Job, in particular, reads differently once you know a man built a water-splitting cell with its twenty-second verse on the front.
