Excess voltage/spacing causes electron leakage progressing to arcing and direct short
As applied voltage increases past a limiting level (or spacing decreases past a minimum), electron leakage from the negative plate exciter increases until an electrical arc forms directly between the plate exciters, producing a direct short with maximum current and voltage dropping to zero.
