Is the miner worth more?
I NOTE the threatened closure of many coal mines and the massive redundancy payments proposed by this Government from taxpayers’ pockets.
Does a coal miner deserve special privileges with regard to redundancy any more than scientists, engineers, physicists, doctors, nurses, etc?
Everyone contributes to the community and should be treated the same.
If the Government won’t subsidise coal production, as happens in Europe, the obvious alternative is to reduce prices so that it is more competitive.
Perhaps a lower-paid job is better than no job at all, but no doubt Mr Arthur Scargill will disagree.
Much of industry is committed to gas derived from the North Sea. Only a few weeks ago an earthquake of 4.5 on the Richter scale occurred in North Wales.
This went almost unnoticed, perhaps deliberately so. Consider a similar event with an epicentre in the North Sea or along the East Coast. . oil and gas pipelines would be fractured – do I need to spell out the effects?
Readers are all too familiar with the hazards attaching to nuclear fuel.
The Departments of Energy and the Environment are doing nothing to bring on stream clean alternative fuels.
It took about 12 letters to the Department of Energy before they admitted the existence of fuel cells.
They would not admit that water could be converted to a cheap, non-polluting fuel. They apparently had not heard of the Billings hydrogen-powered car, the Meyer water fuel cell and the fact that Mercedes, BMW and the Japanese all have cars using water-derived fuel.
Doesn’t it just make you proud to be British?

Walton is the engineer of the 1989 Poole venture and the 1990 Greenwatch column, who in July 1991 asked the paper to say he was "no longer connected in any way" with Meyer's invention.
